CHIN E-1 Elementary Modern Chinese I
Workshop. 4 units. Noncredit and undergraduate credit $640. Limited enrollment.

Note: this course begins Thursday, Sept. 23.

Fall term, section 1 (10026) (Syllabus): Raymond D. Lum, PhD, Asian Bibliographer, Harvard College Library. Monday and Thursday, 5:30-7:30 pm. Vanserg Hall 24B.
Fall term, section 2 (11251) (Syllabus): Baozhang He, PhD, Senior Preceptor in Chinese, Harvard University. Monday and Thursday, 7:35-9:35 pm. Vanserg Hall 25A.

Introduction to modern Mandarin pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and writing in Chinese characters and romanization. Emphasis will be on conversation. Approximately 400 characters and half of the basic grammar will be learned. Pinyin romanization and simplified characters will be used. Not for students who have studied Chinese previously.

CHIN E-2 Elementary Modern Chinese II (20022) (Syllabus)

A continuation of CHIN E-1. Speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills are emphasized through introduction of additional vocabulary and grammar patterns. Students entering CHIN E-2 should know pinyin romanization and a minimum of 200 characters.

CHIN E-30 Elementary Modern Chinese III (10027) (Syllabus)

Note: this course begins Thursday, Sept. 23.

This course is a continuation of CHIN E-2. Additional vocabulary and more complex grammar patterns will be introduced. Emphasis will be on further development of listening and speaking skills while increasing attention to reading and writing.

This course completes the student's introduction to basic modern Chinese grammar. It is conducted largely in Chinese. Speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills will be emphasized.
