DRAM E-5 American Repertory Theatre Production Case Study (20055)

The focus of the course will be the texts and productions of the 1999-2000 season of the American Repertory Theatre (ART). Students will examine four to five plays produced during the season and will study the processes by which the texts are transformed into works of theater. Key artistic and technical personnel involved in these productions will discuss their work in interpreting and realizing these projects.

DRAM E-10 Introduction to Acting

Through individual and group exercises, monologues, improvisations, and scene studies this workshop, eclectic in method, will help students develop their acting potential and sharpen their skills in interpreting scripts. Students will be expected to keep journals of their work. Previous theater study is not required.

DRAM E-11 Intermediate Acting (10598)

Designed for more advanced students, this workshop will use improvisation, character analysis, and scripted and spontaneous monologues inspired by literature and portrait art. Work on scenes from modern plays will develop sensitivity to text, awareness of collaboration, and creative interpretation.

DRAM E-12 Acting Workshop: Shakespeare (20057)

Workshop. 4 units. Undergraduate credit $640, graduate credit $1,145. Monday, 5:30-7:30 pm. Loeb Drama Center Dance Studio. Limited enrollment. Spring term.

The plays of Shakespeare as theater, with an American approach to verse speaking and characterization. Scenes from the plays will be rehearsed, and the verse will be interpreted in light of modern experience. Classwork will include individual coaching and presentation of rehearsed scenes from Shakespeare. Professional actors from the ART Company may assist students in preparation and will critique class presentations.

DRAM E-20 Advanced Acting
Workshop. 4 units. Undergraduate credit $640, graduate credit $1,145. Prerequisite(s): students must bring a list of their previous theater experience to the first class. Limited enrollment.

Spring term (21260) : Marcus Stern, MFA, Lecturer on Dramatic Arts, Harvard University. Monday, 5:30-7:30 pm. Sever Hall 210.

This workshop will help the actor create a concrete list of working steps in order to determine the action options that best maximize the potential of each scene; discover different methods of characterization that best suit each role; clarify text analysis work that translates into practical steps for rehearsal; and choose and prepare audition material that best capitalizes on the actor's strengths. The course will include an extensive amount of scenework.

An introduction to directing for the stage, the course will focus on communication--with the audience, with the actors, and with the designers--as the essence of directing. We will address three general questions: What is the job of the director? What are the tools available for the completion of that job? How can the director gauge the success of his or her efforts?

Note: this course begins Monday, Sept. 27.

A scene study laboratory for people with some directing training or extensive theater experience. Students will direct each other in material drawn from a variety of styles, with focus on text analysis, actor/director communication, and principles of staging. Students must be prepared to commit to 4 hours of outside rehearsal time per week.
