VIET E-1a Elementary Vietnamese (11605) (Syllabus)

Workshop. 2 units. Noncredit and undergraduate credit $465. Thursday, 7:35-9:35 pm. Sever Hall 208. Limited enrollment. Fall term.

This course introduces students to the contemporary Hanoi dialect of the Vietnamese language, and provides students with a basic ability to understand, speak, read, and write Vietnamese. The course features a comprehensive and systematic survey of the fundamentals of Vietnamese phonetics, spelling rules, grammar, and vocabulary, and encourages basic conversation through an interactive and communication-oriented approach.

Workshop. 2 units. Noncredit and undergraduate credit $465. Thursday, 7:35-9:35 pm. Sever Hall 110. Prerequisite(s): VIET E-1a or equivalent. Limited enrollment. Spring term.

Students will continue to develop speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills covered in VIET E-1a through the study and practice of additional vocabulary and grammatical patterns in class presentations. Students will also read simple articles from Vietnamese newspapers and magazines, and compose brief essays on topics of everyday life.
