Registration:

Student Responsibilities

The policies and procedures described in this catalogue apply to all Harvard Extension School students. Failure to read this catalogue, negligence, personal factors, or contradictory information from any source are not acceptable grounds for seeking exemption from these policies and procedures.

Students are responsible for ensuring that they are adequately prepared for the courses in which they enroll. All courses except those offered by the Harvard Institute for English Language (IEL) Programs require proficiency in the English language. Prerequisites for individual courses are listed in the course descriptions. A student who registers for a course without having the listed prerequisites runs the risk of being withdrawn from that course.

Students who enroll in courses for credit are expected to attend all classes, take all examinations, and complete all other required coursework. Students who enroll in noncredit IEL courses also are expected to attend all classes and complete all course requirements. If a student is absent from a class for any reason, including registering late, it is the student's responsibility to make up all work from that class. The Administrative Board for University Extension reserves the right to require a student to withdraw from a course if the student joins the course too late to make up the required work.

A student who is inadequately prepared, fails to attend classes, neglects coursework, or disrupts the course's progress with inappropriate behavior may be required to withdraw from the course by the Administrative Board for University Extension and may be excluded from future courses. Students who are required to withdraw from a course are not eligible for a tuition refund.

Personal Identification Number. Personal identification numbers (PINs) are issued to all students for secure electronic access to their Extension School records. Students must provide their PIN and student identification number (Social Security number or Extension-assigned number) in order to review their course schedules and hear their final grades via the Division of Continuing Education Telephone Information System (DCETel), (617) 496-1111. Students are notified of their PINs during their first term of registration; thereafter they may change their PINs by calling DCETel. Students are responsible for keeping track of their PINs and for keeping their PINs confidential. Students who lose or forget their PINs may request new ones in person in the Registrar's Office, on presentation of a photo ID, or by mail.

Address changes. Students should notify the Extension School in writing of any address changes in order to receive important information such as their PINs and grade reports. Students may submit address changes by letter, or they may use forms that are available at 51 Brattle Street and on the back of their course confirmations. Change-of-address forms also may be downloaded from this website. Address changes should be sent by mail to the Registrar's Office, fourth floor, or by fax to (617) 495-2921.
